AI Tools and Training for WSE Students

Looking for an AI tool, an introduction to using AI, or someone who can help? These Johns Hopkins resources can help Whiting School of Engineering students get started.

Before using AI for coursework, check the course syllabus and ask your instructor for the specific assignment.

Start with HopGPT

HopGPT is a good starting point for general-purpose AI assistance. JHU provides access to multiple AI models at no additional cost with a JHED ID.

Other AI Tools

For coding: GitHub Copilot
Eligible, verified students can obtain GitHub Copilot Student at no cost. You must verify your student status through GitHub Education and then activate Copilot. Follow GitHub’s student setup instructions, or visit JHU’s GitHub resource page for university guidance.

For web-based assistance: Microsoft Copilot
JHU’s guidance provides access to web-based Copilot without an additional license. Sign in with your JHU work or school account. Other capabilities depend on your account, licensing, and university configuration. See JHU’s Microsoft Copilot guidance for access information.

Use AI Responsibly

A tool’s availability does not mean its use is permitted on every assignment. Follow your syllabus and assignment instructions, and ask your instructor when expectations are unclear.

Check AI-generated facts, calculations, and citations, and acknowledge AI use as required. Before entering sensitive or nonpublic information, check JHU’s Guidelines for Responsible Use of AI.

Engineering for Professionals students should also review the EP student guidance on responsible generative AI use.
