Replacing a Video Stream in Panopto

This article provides guidance for replacing the video stream on an existing Panopto video. Replacing a stream is not recommended for regular use because it can result in content from previous terms or sections being replaced or other technical glitches. Use this process only when replacing the stream is absolutely necessary.

If the audio or timing on your file is different from the original video, consider uploading a new video instead of replacing the stream. Changes to audio or timing may require captions to be reordered or corrected.

Downloading Existing Captions

  1. In Panopto, find the video you need to update.
  2. Hover over the video and click Settings.
  3. Click Captions in the left menu. Then click to display the Caption file data. Review the caption file information. If the captions are not automatic captions, download and save the caption file. This is especially important if the video has human-transcribed captions.
  4. After downloading and saving the caption file, delete the captions from the video.
  5. Close the settings window and return to the course folder.

Adding the Replacement Stream

  1. Hover over the video and click Edit.
  2. In the editor, click Streams, and then click Add Stream.
  3. Upload the replacement video file.
Note: Use a unique file name for the replacement video, such as UPDATED_oldname.mp4. This will help you tell the new stream apart from the original stream.
  4. After the new stream has been added, find the old stream.
  5. Click More Options for the old stream (3 dot menu) and click Delete. The newly uploaded stream will become the primary stream.

Re-Importing Captions

  1. In the editor, click Captions in the left menu.
  2. Click the option to Import Captions, and upload the caption file you saved earlier.
  3. Review the video and captions to make sure they are correct, click Apply to save your changes.
  4. After processing is complete, the updated video will be available for review.
