Changing a Video Preview/Thumbnail in Panopto

The preview image in Panopto is the thumbnail viewers see before the video is played. If the auto-generated thumbnail is not the image you want to display, you can change the preview image. This change can be made by anyone with the role of Creator or higher in Panopto.

  1. Find the video you are looking to adjust in Panopto.
  2. Hover over the video and click on the Edit button.

  3. In the Video Editor, restart the video and let it play to the point that you want to select as the new preview image.
  4. Click the three dots to expand the menu above the timeline, and select Set primary as preview image.

  5. Click the Apply button at the top of the page to save this setting, and then click the Exit button.

Note: If you do not want to save your changes make sure to click Revert so that the video does not stay in editing status, which may cause disruptions.

  6. Once your video is done processing, you should see the change to the preview image.

For additional guidance, refer to Panopto's article on changing a video's preview image, including options for using a frame from the video or uploading a custom image.
