Below are reliable, low-barrier tools your students can use to record, edit, and submit media-based presentations for assignment submissions. A tool matrix can be found at the end of the article for quick review of each tool.
Note: To protect your Canvas course from exceeding storage limits, all video presentations should be submitted through Panopto, regardless of the tool used to create the recording. Panopto offers unlimited hosting, automatic captioning, and smoother playback than direct Canvas uploads.
Panopto Capture Recorder
Best for: Quick, browser-based recording with minimal setup
Why use it:
- Runs entirely in the browser—no downloads required.
- Simple, student-friendly interface with clear input selection
- Automatically uploads to your course’s Panopto folder.
- Can record multiple sources at once (camera, screen, application window, tabs) for easily sharing presentation materials.
- Videos are automatically captioned.

Panopto Desktop Recorder
Why use it:
- Downloadable application for Mac/Windows
- More robust than the browser version, especially on slower network connections
- Allows recording without an internet connection, then uploading later.

PowerPoint
Best for: Slide-driven pitches or briefs
Why use it:
- Students can record narration on each slide.
- Exports as a video file (MP4), which can be uploaded through Panopto.
- Very low technical barrier
- Tool is often used in students' work environments.
Zoom
Best for: Individual or group presentations, interviews, slide narrations
Why use it:
- Students already know it and have institutional access
- Facilitates recording group meetings
- Easy screen sharing and recording
Note: By default, student Zoom accounts do not include cloud recording. Students will need to record locally to their device unless they have been granted permission for cloud recording.
VoiceThread
Best for: Interactive, discussion-based presentations.
Why use it:
- Students can upload slides, images, or videos and narrate them with audio or video.
- Classmates and instructors can leave audio, video, or text comments directly on the presentation.
- Great for assignments where peer engagement or reflective commentary is part of the learning goals.
