The Panopto video editor allows you to easily edit your existing videos in Canvas without the need to download the video, edit in a separate program, and re-upload it to your course.
Common Scenarios
You may want to edit a Panopto video when you need to:
- Highlighting part of an office hours session for use in the next week’s study materials.
- Creating shorter, more focused videos from a longer lecture recording.
- Removing small talk or dead air from the beginning or end of an office hours recording.
For example, if your office hours recording was automatically uploaded to your Panopto course folder using cloud recording within your WSE Zoom account, you can create a shorter clip and post the edited version directly to the relevant module, discussion board, or announcement.
Trimming a Video
These steps begin in the Panopto Video area of your Canvas course. For help finding or adding the Panopto Video area to the course menu, refer to the Panopto Video guide.
- In the course menu, select Panopto Video.
- Locate the video you wish to edit and select the Edit button.
- The video will open in a new window with the full editor and timeline showing.
- Confirm that the cut tool is selected, this is usually selected by default.
Note: With longer videos you may wish to expand the timeline using the left-pointing arrow next to the cut tool. You can also use the zoom feature above the timeline to make more precise edits. - To trim the beginning or end of a video, go to that point in the timeline where you want the video to begin or end.
- Click and drag the dark gray edit handle to trim the beginning or end of the video.
- Confirm that the sections you want to remove are grayed out on the timeline.
Note: Editing in Panopto is non-destructive. You can add this content back in later if needed. - When you are satisfied with the edits you have made, click Apply to save your edits.
- Your video will be available for review once it is done processing.
- You may now exit the editor page and your newly created clip will appear after processing.
