Importing Quiz Questions in Canvas using a Spreadsheet

If you would like to save yourself time when creating quizzes and exams in your Canvas course site, quiz questions can be uploaded in bulk using the process outlined here. It will require using Excel to create a CSV file, and then converting that into a QTI file. Once you have that QTI file, it can be imported into Canvas. The following instructions will walk you through the process.

Instructions

  1. Using Excel and the CSV file template when creating the quiz questions for your course.
  2. Make sure to save the file as a CSV file type. It is helpful to name the file with a unique title.
  3. Convert the CSV file into a QTI file, you can use this converter tool: https://canconvert.k-state.edu/qti/.
  4. In your Canvas course site, click on the Settings menu option. And then choose Import Course Content in the right-hand menu.
    menu options under course settings
  5. On the Import Content page, select QTI .zip file as the Content Type. Attach your converted QTI file. And select the question bank where the questions should reside. We recommend that you select Create New Question Bank, and give the question bank a unique name.import page showing all options
  6. Click Import.
  7. Once the import is complete, you can navigate to Quizzes in your course menu to view the imported quiz questions. Note: It's recommended that you review each question and answer to make sure that no errors were entered in the importing process.

Template Guidelines

When using the CSV file template (linked above), use the following guidelines when creating quiz questions.

  • Column A is the type of question: MC (multiple choice); MR (multiple response/answers); TF (true/false).
  • Column B is not used but must be present. Do not enter any content into this column.
  • Column C is the point value of the question. It can be between 0-100 and have up to two decimal places (3.33).
  • Column D is the question body.
  • Column E is the correct answer. This should be a number 1-5, which corresponds to one of the possible answers listed in columns F-J. For example, if the correct answer is in column F, enter 1 into column E. For the True/False questions, use 1 for True and 0 for False. For multiple answers questions, use a comma to separate the list of correct answers. For example enter 1,2 if columns F and G are correct.
