Sharing and Publishing your ePortfolio

After you have created your ePortfolio using Digication, you can follow the instructions provided here to set the share permissions on your portfolio and publish it for sharing with faculty, peers, or potential employers.

Step 1: Sharing

Sharing settings is probably one of the biggest virtues of Digication. The first time you share and publish your ePortfolio, several additional options are available to guide you through the process. Click Share at the top of your ePortfolio to start the share process.

The share setting window will open indicating that this is your first time sharing. Click View Recommended Settings.

A set of general settings will appear where you will be able to specify your ePortfolio settings. Make sure to set your ePortfolio Thumbnail by selecting Choose Thumbnail. You can either upload a new image or select one from the Previous Uploads.

Make sure to review and/or edit your ePortfolio Title. Typically, the title should contain your name. The URL for your ePortfolio will automatically adjust to reflect your ePortfolio title, as long as you haven’t selected the URL field with your cursor.

The next step is to set your ePortfolio permissions.  The default setting on all new ePortfolios is private, thus allowing viewing only by you. By selecting Private within Johns Hopkins University, your ePortfolio will be viewable by all logged-in faculty and students.

We recommend that you either select Private within Johns Hopkins University or Private and then share with specific individuals or groups.

To share with specific individuals or groups, use the search field by entering either their name or email address. Click on the name of the individual or group you wish to add in the search results.

By default, Digication will give the added individual or group the Viewer permissions. You can change the permission by clicking the arrow next to their name. The permissions options include:

  • Viewer: Able to view the ePortfolio even if permissions are set to Private to Me.
  • Editor: Able to add and edit content.
  • Publisher: Able to add and edit content and publish changes.
  • Administrator: Able to add/edit content, publish changes, and manage ePortfolio permissions.

Additional Sharing settings can be set to allow your ePortfolio to appear in the school-wide Digication directory or to set a password.

When all share settings have been edited and reviewed, click on Save.

Step 2: Publishing

After saving your sharing settings, you will now need to make sure your pages are published. Immediately after saving your sharing settings, you will see a confirmation message with the option to publish.

There are two options to Publish, one to publish the current page, or to publish multiple pages. By selecting Publish Pages, you will be directed to a list of pages in your ePortfolio to select which ones are published. After making your selections, click Publish. You have now successfully shared and published your ePortfolio.

PRO TIPS:
When you are sharing, you can actually add passwords. This will be helpful if: you are working with Intellectual Property if you are working with an industrial counterpart (for example in a Capstone or Design Team course), and if you have signed an NDA (non-disclosure agreement). If you are reporting work from a course, and publishing in the "open" remember to attribute the content to everyone involved and to check with your faculty if there are things that should not be published (again, IP could be one of them).
