Videos for Whiting School of Engineering courses are delivered in Canvas through Panopto. Faculty and students can watch videos directly in Canvas or launched in the Panopto interactive player to access more advanced features, such as caption search, bookmarking, and additional accessibility control for caption size, position, and color.
Panopto Video Player Controls in Canvas
The embedded Panopto player in Canvas displays lecture videos and other course recordings. Use the controls below to download a video, adjust playback settings, turn captions on or off, or open the video in the Panopto interactive player for additional features.
- Download (down arrow): Downloads the video as an .mp4 for offline viewing. Captions may display during playback when using a compatible player (for example, VLC media player).
- Open in new window (diagonal arrow): Opens the video in a new browser tab in the Panopto interactive player.
- Captions (CC): Turns captions on or off.
- Settings (gear icon): Adjusts captioning options, playback speed, and video quality.
- Fullscreen (four-corner lines): Plays the video in fullscreen mode. Press Esc to exit.

Video Data & Caption Search (up arrow at bottom center): Expands a panel with video information and a searchable caption transcript. Select a result to jump to that point in the video.
Interactive Player Features in Panopto
To use additional Panopto features, select Open in new window (diagonal arrow) in the embedded player. The video opens in a new browser tab in the Panopto interactive player.
The interactive player includes the same playback controls as the embedded player and adds a side panel with these tools:
Contents: When a video includes slides, Panopto can generate a clickable table of contents from slide headings. Select an item to jump to that point in the video.
Captions: View a time-stamped caption transcript and search for keywords or phrases to jump to matching moments. Use the Download icon (down arrow) in the captions panel to download the transcript.
Caption appearance: Select Settings (gear icon) to adjust caption position, color, and size.
Bookmarks: Add private bookmarks at specific timestamps to return to later. Bookmarks are only visible to you and cannot be shared publicly.
