Johns Hopkins affiliates can use two related but separate GitHub programs. JHU GitHub Enterprise provides university-managed organizations and single sign-on, while GitHub Education provides individual benefits to eligible students and educators. Use this overview to choose the option that fits your work.
JHU GitHub Enterprise
The Johns Hopkins Open Source Programs Office (OSPO) manages a university-wide GitHub Enterprise account. Organizations in the enterprise receive:
- JHU single sign-on (SSO) for members and owners
- Unlimited private repositories
- Internal repositories that enterprise members can view
- A shared enterprise allowance of 50,000 GitHub Actions minutes per month
- A shared enterprise allowance of 50 GB for GitHub Packages
Organization owners can use the JHU GitHub Enterprise request form to request a new organization or move an existing organization into the enterprise. Students who need access to an existing organization should contact that organization’s owner instead of submitting the form.
GitHub uses a personal account together with JHU SSO. After an organization owner adds your personal GitHub account, sign in to JHU GitHub Enterprise with your JHU credentials. This connection lets you work in JHU organizations while retaining the identity and contribution history associated with your personal GitHub account.
GitHub Education benefits
GitHub Education is separate from JHU GitHub Enterprise. Eligible students and educators apply individually through GitHub and use the benefits with their personal GitHub accounts.
- Students can apply to GitHub Education as a student for benefits such as the Student Developer Pack, GitHub Copilot, and personal Codespaces usage.
- Educators, faculty members, and researchers can apply to GitHub Education as a teacher for eligible teaching and research benefits.
Verify your JHU affiliation
To apply, open your GitHub Education benefits settings, select Start an application, and complete the form.
If you do not have a current official J-Card, you can use your myJH profile as proof of affiliation:
- Sign in to myJH.
- Enter your name in the People search bar.
- Select your profile.
- Take a screenshot of the profile page showing your name and current employment or student status.
- Upload the screenshot when GitHub requests proof of affiliation.
If your affiliation information does not appear, select your JHED ID in the upper-right corner of myJH, select myProfile, and update your profile before taking the screenshot.
Important: If you are outside Maryland, connect to the JHU VPN before uploading your proof of affiliation.
After submitting the application, refresh the GitHub Education benefits page to check your approval status. If GitHub cannot verify your status, contact GitHub Education Support.
